Fans of 3 Idiots and Munna Bhai are in for a treat! Celebrated filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra has officially confirmed that sequels to both blockbuster franchises are in the works. While promoting Zero Se Starta film documenting the making of his recent release 12th Fail, Chopra revealed the exciting news.
“I am writing both 2 Idiots and Munna Bhai 3. On top of that, I am trying to make a film for kids. The film’s title hasn’t been decided yet. I am also writing a horror comedy, and it is very interesting,” shared Chopra during an interview with Dainik Bhaskar. He added, “First, we will write for 1-2 years, and then it should be made. I think the possibility of 2 Idiots and Munna Bhai 3 is there soon.”
Chopra emphasized the importance of taking time to craft strong scripts. “I could have made 2-3 sequels of Munna Bhai and 3 Idiots. Bahut maal kama leta main (I could have earned loads of money), bought a big car and a big house. But if those weren’t good films, I wouldn’t have enjoyed talking about them because I would know that I compromised my conscience just to mint money,” he explained.
Both franchises, directed by Raj Kumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, have cemented their place as classics in Indian cinema. The Munna Bhai series, starting with Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003) and followed by Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), features Sanjay Dutt as the lovable gangster Munna Bhai and Arshad Warsi as his loyal sidekick, Circuit. Known for their humor and profound social messages, the films have a special place in the hearts of fans.
Similarly, 3 Idiots (2009), starring Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi, took a heartfelt look at the pressures of the education system, delivering both laughs and a strong message.
In the meantime, Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s latest directorial venture, 12th Fail, has been garnering praise. Based on Anurag Pathak’s book, the film tells the story of Abhilash, a small-town boy grappling with the pressure to succeed in his 12th-grade exams.
