Disney’s live-action spectacle ‘Mufasa: The Lion King‘ is roaring at the Indian box office. The film that is still in its first week, earned an impressive Rs 14.25 crore net on its sixth day across all languages. The prequel to the 2019 blockbuster ‘The Lion King’ has managed to hold its ground, despite stiff competition at the box office.
The film, according to Sacnilk, showcased remarkable resilience, particularly with strong occupancies in English (63.06%), Hindi (51.62%), and Tamil (60.33%) on the Christmas Day holiday. The film, directed by Barry Jenkins, has already grossed around Rs 64 crore (including 3D charges) in its first five days in India. With robust pre-sales and a surge in collections on Christmas, ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ is set to enter the Rs 100 crore gross club by Saturday.
While the franchise’s popularity and the star-studded Indian voice cast—featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Mahesh Babu, Aryan KhanAbRam Khan, and others—contributed significantly to its success, Mufasa faced stiff competition from Allu Arjun’s ‘Pushpa 2‘.
In comparison to the 2019 ‘The Lion King’, which grossed over Rs 190 crore in India, ‘Mufasa’ might fall short of those figures. However, with New Year week ahead, analysts predict it could come close, depending on weekday performances.
‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ is poised to become the third Hollywood film of 2024 to join the Rs 100 crore gross club in India, following Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (Rs 134+ crore gross) and Deadpool & Wolverine (Rs 169+ crore gross).
Globally, Mufasa continues to captivate audiences with its stellar English voice cast, including Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Donald Glover, Beyoncé, and John Kani. In India, the emotional connection with the iconic voices of Shah Rukh Khan and Mahesh Babu has added a unique charm.
