Kiran Rao’s latest directorial venture, ‘Laapataaa Ladies‘, which has made it to the Oscars 2025 as India’s official entry, graced the silver screens in Japan today (October 4).
As the makers and cast cherish the joy of its Oscar entry, they have an additional reason to celebrate. Kiran shared some interesting reviews from the show through her Instagram story.The movie was screened as ‘Where is the Bride’ in Japan, and one lady was seen attending the event in a red outfit, hiding her face like the brides (Phool and Jaya) in the movie.

Earlier, the director shared a video to express her excitement regarding the movie’s screening in Japan and also mentioned that she is eagerly awaiting the reviews.
The film features Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha RantaSparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan in key roles. Set in the heart of rural India, the film tells the story of two brides who find themselves separated during a train journey, setting off a chain of unforeseen and intricate events. The movie features newcomers in the lead roles, and after its unwavering success, Kiran addressed queries about why she did not opt for leading stars in her movie. Kiran told India Today that the story resonated with her as it centers on two girls searching for freedom and finding their voices. The fresh faces helped the audience forget they were watching a movie and instead feel like they were witnessing a real-life incident. She believes that this worked in favor of the film.

‘Laapataa Ladies’ is produced by Aamir Khan and Jyoti Deshpande. The script is based on an award-winning story by Biplab Goswami. The movie also won the Best Film Critics’ Choice Award at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2024 (IFFM).
