Janhvi Kapoor recently responded to disappointment over Interstellar’s IMAX release being canceled in India due to Pushpa 2: The Rule occupying all IMAX screens. While some Nolan fans expressed frustration, Janhvi defended Pushpa 2 and criticized the overemphasis on Western films, urging more appreciation for Indian cinema.
Janhvi responded to an Instagram post where netizens expressed disappointment over Interstellar’s re-release being canceled because Pushpa 2 occupied all IMAX screens in India.
The headline of the post by Tatva India reads, “’India doesn’t deserve cinema’ say fans as Interstellar won’t be released in India, Pushpa 2 gets all IMAX.”
Janhvi wrote, ‘Pushpa 2 is also cinema. Why are we so obsessed with idolising the west and running down things that come out of our own country and instantly disqualifying it from being considered as worthy? The same rooted representation and larger than life tone other countries appreciate and our fascinated by our cinema for, we ourselves are embarrassed of. Sad.’
Janhvi Kapoor’s comment on the post fueled further debate. While one user wrote, ‘@janhvikapoor don’t you think people should have a choice regarding films, which film they want to watch’, another one added, ‘@janhvikapoor yeah , this the trend right now like people who watches the west are behaving like they are in upper class then the people who watches the bollywood or any Indian movies’. A user also commented, ‘Cinema is meant for the audience, so the audience doesn’t deserve options of what they want to watch ?’
